Dr. Kachipande is a sociologist and professor of Sociology, Africana Studies, and Women and Gender Studies. Prior to her career in academia, she worked as a Program Specialist for a clinical research organization, supporting patient assistance programs within the healthcare industry. She began her professional career as a Human Resources Assistant in the nonprofit sector, experiences that continue to inform her interdisciplinary and community-engaged approach to teaching, research, and public scholarship.

She earned her PhD in Sociology and the Africana Studies program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State College (Virginia Tech).  At Virginia Teach, she also earned graduate certificates were in International Research and in Women and Gender Studies.

She also has a MA in Pan African Studies from Syracuse University in New York and an MBA from Hood College in Maryland. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Truman State University in Missouri.

Her current research is in mobility studies, which focuses on the movement of people, objects, and ideas. Her topics of interests include globalization, tourism, migration, health, international development, and sex work. She has contributed academic work in journals, books, magazines, encyclopedias essays, and reports on these topics.

As a public sociologist, her opinion pieces have been published in magazines and newspapers including the Guardian (UK), Pambazuka News, Voices of Africa, and other pan-African media. She is co-founder of non-profit, Southern African Community USA (501)(c)(3) and former President of the Malawi Association in Washington (501) (c)(3).
