This website is my re‑entry into the online world on my own space. I had a website before, but this space feels like a fresh beginning—more intentional, more grounded, and more aligned with my current thoughts which are a product of our changing world. Here, I’m gathering my work, my ideas, and the stories that shape me as a sociologist, scholar‑activist, and storyteller. It feels good to be back!
As I return to this space, it feels right to share a brief excerpt from my Scholarship page — a snapshot of the research and writing that continue to shape my work:
I am a sociologist, scholar-activist, and storyteller committed to understanding the social forces that shape our everyday lives. My work sits at the intersection of scholarship and public engagement, driven by a belief that research should not only deepen knowledge but also contribute to more just, equitable, and inclusive societies.
As a scholar, I am fascinated by questions of identity, belonging, migration, citizenship, development, and the lived experiences of people navigating an increasingly interconnected world. My research explores how power, history, and globalization influence communities, particularly across Africa and its diasporas. I am especially interested in the ways ordinary people create meaning, build resilience, and imagine alternative futures in the face of social, political, and economic challenges.
What motivates my work is a commitment to scholar-activism—the idea that my research, teaching, and public engagement should be intentionally connected to social justice, community needs, and real-world change. I believe scholarship has the power to illuminate social realities, challenge inequality, and inspire transformation when it is grounded in the experiences, voices, and aspirations of the communities it seeks to understand. As a public sociologist, I am committed to producing knowledge that is accessible, engaged, and meaningful beyond the academy. Through research, teaching, writing, and storytelling, I strive to bridge the gap between data-driven academic knowledge and public understanding, using scholarship as a catalyst for dialogue, reflection, and collective action.
Ultimately, my work is guided by curiosity and grounded in research, evidence, and informed inquiry. I believe in the power of data, ideas, and stories to deepen understanding, inspire dialogue, build connections, and contribute to a more just and equitable world.
Theory without practice is just as incomplete as practice without theory. The two have to go together.-Assata Shakur.
